What is an influencer?

An influencer is an influential person who, often through social media, approaches potential customers and can convince them to buy a certain product. It has become a popular and very effective form of marketing.

An influencer works together with a company or brand and promotes a product or service for it. Because influencers are often looked up to, followers of the influencer are more likely to buy that product or purchase that service, because an influencer’s positive review often has a lot of value to them.

Becoming an influencer on Instagram

Many influencers can be found on Instagram and TikTok these days. You can become an infuencer on Instagram by having a lot of presence here and getting a lot of followers. The moment you have a larger reach than just your own network, you also become attractive to other parties, such as companies and brands. They can approach you through your DMs for example for a collaboration.

Becoming an influencer for clothing

But there are different ways to become an influencer. If you want to become an influencer to promote clothing and jewelry it is very common that you have to register on a site. Often on the clothing brand’s website there is a link where you can sign up. You then usually get a personal discount code. The moment someone orders something and uses your code, you get a certain amount of money.

Becoming a micro influencer

A micro influencer is someone with 10,000 to 100,000 followers. This is much less reach than larger influencers, but these people can also be interesting for brands. Because even though micro influencers have a large reach, there is often a certain niche or theme that plays a role among the followers. So a post in this limited group can be much more valuable than to a wider audience.

It is very easy to become an influencer these days — literally anyone can do it! However, it’s important to know that being an influencer involves more than posting some photos and getting paid. You’ll need to immerse yourself in the platform you’re active on and decide on a strategy that you’ll work with.
