Starting your own YouTube channel is something that many people dream about, but you can also use YouTube as an additional channel to your business. Whatever your goal is, here is how you can start your own YouTube channel!

Why start your own YouTube channel?

Starting your own YouTube channel can have several reasons, but it often comes down to YouTubers wanting to share their passion. Just look at NikkieTutorials who makes makeup tutorials. Of course, you also have people who enjoy capturing their lives and post daily or weekly vlogs.

Where do you start?

It’s important to choose a niche for your channel. Do you want to share your life? Do you want to make tutorials about something? Or is there a special aspect of your life you want to share, like adventures you go on with friends, games you play or music you make? Think carefully about what you want to start your own YouTube channel about.

What steps should you take?

After you have determined the niche or topic of your channel, it is important that you actually create a YouTube channel. Come up with a name for your channel, create a bio and make a banner and possibly link your other socials.

Also make a schedule for your channel. How much time do you want to put into your channel? Do you want to be working on your channel full time or part time? This will determine how many videos you want and can post.

You have already thought about what kind of videos you want to post and now it is time to finally make them! For this it is important that you have the right equipment at home, such as a good camera. Of course, you want the videos you make to be of high quality.

After you have recorded your video, you need to get it ready to post. You do this by editing the footage and adding sound effects if necessary. Also, choose an attractive thumbnail for your video! It helps if all the thumbnails on your channel are in the same style and also match your channel and banner.

Of course it is also important to promote your videos and your channel. Make a promotion plan and think about how, where and when you want to start promoting your videos. As your channel grows and you get more and more subscribers, you can even make money with YouTube through ads and collaborations with brands.

YouTube channel startup examples

There are many people who start their own YouTube channel; you probably even know a few people who actively post videos on it. I’ve listed a few different types of YouTubers for you:

Vlogs

There are a number of famous Dutch vloggers who once started their channel small. Examples are Monica Geuze, Anna Nooshin and Enzo Knol. They all capture their own lives on camera and have with this.

Niche

Of course, videos about different subjects are not equal to tutorials. Look for example also at the videos of Rijk Hofman who reviews reality shows, Buzzfeed Unsolved who discusses crime cases or PewdiePie who became famous with videos about games.

Tutorials

On YouTube you can also find tutorials, like the videos of NikkieTutorials. Of course, makeup videos are not the only types of tutorials. For example, there are also videos about Photoshop, playing an instrument, and games like Minecraft. You can actually find a tutorial about anything; there are countless channels that explain how to create a Word document or how to do a magic trick with cards.

YouTube for entrepreneurs

There are also many entrepreneurs and companies that have a YouTube channel and actively use it. For example, the Jumbo’s YouTube channel is full of recipes. Other examples are the Gary Vee channel who tells you how to become successful as an entrepreneur or our own channel where our founders, Robin and Martijn, talk to other entrepreneurs about their businesses.

YouTube channel tips

SEO

As with blogs and other things you put online, you can use SEO. So do that too! You can include SEO in the title of your video and in the description. This ensures that your video is also found well on Google!

Tools

You will need some tools and skills, but if you are serious about starting with YouTube it is worth investing money in it. A laptop, camera, tripod and Adobe Premier Pro are essential for a YouTuber!

A YouTube channel is easy to set up, but the real work starts the moment you start posting videos and promoting your channel. But who knows, maybe in no time you’ll have a good number of subscribers and you can even turn this hobby into your profession!
